As artists we are constantly struggling with the duality of art as a means of expression as opposed to a means of subsistence. The fact of the matter is; the best art is almost never the best selling art. As Alexander Hamilton once pointed out "the masses are asses". Society is laden with mediocrity by its very nature and we simply cannot expect it to be otherwise. The best art is always ahead of its time and rarely has a large following. Vincent Van Gogh, arguably the 19th century's most influential painter never sold a single painting while he was alive. In frustration he cut off his own ear as his work went largely unrecognized until his death. While Van Gogh's story is widely publicized, there are countless others that go unnoticed, undocumented, melting away into time as history that will never be written. |
